Boredom
is a byproduct of modern social alienation.
One
is simply not interested in anything around. Nothing available
or immediately approachable excites him. He starts getting
bored, and with the passage of time this boredom starts encompassing
increasingly more situations, and the phenomenon becomes persistent.
Ultimately,
the persistence of boredom turns into a personality trait,
making the person incapable of enjoyment at all. Life becomes
prosaic.
Boredom
always springs out of a pattern of selection and rejection.
Selection is rare. Rejection is predominant. Compassion is
an exception. Alienation is a rule. One likes only a few things
and dislikes many.
Boredom
can be attacked at the very point where it has sprung out
from. Why does one like a thing and dislike another? Why does
one identify with a few things and feels alienated from the
most?
This
is because our social system has made us so much self-centered
and material oriented that we live in our secluded personal
islands and identify with a very few persons and activities
emotionally. Estrangement gives birth to boredom.
Watch
out! Being bored is as good as being dead!
